Kepley, 53, a four-time Cincinnati Metropolitan champion, led by five holes through the first 13 holes of the double-round championship match at the Western Hills Country Club.

Roth, a 22-year-old former Ohio State and University of Arizona golfer from Pepper Pike, won four of the next five holes to narrow Kepley's lead to one stroke through the first 18 holes. Kepley maintained the lead to go 2-up at the 35th hole, where both she and Roth hit their approaches into greenside bunkers. Roth blasted to within 10 feet of the hole, while Kepley nearly holed her shot from the trap. Roth then conceded the match. BIG LEAD Michelle McGann shot a 3-under-par 68 to take a four-stroke lead through two rounds of the Big Apple Classic in New Rochelle, N.Y.

McGann, a two-time winner in 1995, matched her lowest 36-hole total this year at 134. She curled in a 20-foot putt on her final hole to move four strokes ahead of Caroline Pierce of England. Tied at 3-under 139 were Joan Pitco*ck, Emilee Klein and Mary Beth Zimmerman. TIE AT THE TOP -George Archer, who has won 29 PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour events, and 1 Chuck Montalbano, who hasn't won on either tour, shot 6-under-par 66s to share the firstround lead in the First of America Classic in Ada, Mich. AUTO RACING FAST MARLIN Sterling Marlin turned in the fastest lap before qualifying for the DieHard 500 Winston Cup race in Talladega, was stopped by rain.

Marlin's 194.212 mph led the way, but nine cars did not get to run before a heavy storm moved over the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway. The remaining cars will get their chance at 8 a.m. today. Bobby Labonte was tentatively second in qualifying with a speed of 193.799 mph, followed by Hendrick racing teammates Jeff Gordon and Ken Schrader, and Dale Earnhardt. The top five qualifiers drive Chevys.
