it. >> reporter: i'm ben tracy in charleston, illinois. and that's the "cbs news roundup." reporting from new york city, i'm shanelle kaul. june 6, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." d-day 80 years later, president biden, world leaders, and the last of the greatest generation converge on the beaches of normandy to mark a definitive turning point in world war ii. deadly and dangerous weather. tornadoes hit two states killing a toddler asleep in bed while on the other side of the country they're breaking records for the scorching heat. and wrapping up their case.

the prosecution in hunter biden's gun trial expects to call their final witnesses today after his former partners detail his downfall into addiction. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it was 80 years ago today allied forces stormed the beaches of normandy. the invasion leading to the defeat of the nazis 11 months later. this morning a much different scene as the sun rose. veterans, many around 100 years old, are gathering for what is likely their last trip back to france. president biden is kicking off a day of remembrance, invoking the memory of allies united against tyranny, much like today's allied nations standing behind ukraine. france did not invite russia, a world war ii ally, because of its war against ukraine. it comes as french authorities are investigating a possible terror plot after an explosion at a hotel near paris. cbs' jarred hill is following all the day's developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie.

one person is in custody in relation to that explosion at the hotel room near the paris airport. and while that possible terrorism investigation is under way, president biden and world leaders are preparing to mark this 80th anniversary of d-day. president biden expected to call for unity now as the war in ukraine drags on. this morning france is on alert as president joe biden and other world leaders prepare to commemorate the 80th anniversary of d-day. authorities are investigating a monday night explosion at a hotel room near charles de gaulle airport outside of paris. french police arrested an unnamed 26-year-old russian-ukrainian national who was badly burned in the explosion. authorities found bomb-making materials in his room. french news reports say guns and fake passports were found there, as well. the suspect is from the russian-occupied donbas region of ukraine. he's currently being treated for burns at a local hospital. french police say he's cooperating. right now there are barricades and a heavy security presence

outside of president biden's hotel in paris. the white house says it's aware of the incident, and the fbi is looking into it. secret service says there are no change in the president's planned movements the next few days. >> he's here to honor the veterans, the men who gave their lives and those who fought bravely to defend freedom. >> reporter: this comes as paris is already on high alert ahead of next month's olympic games. no word on a possible motive or link to any other broader group in relation to that hotel room explosion. but obviously that's something that's still under investigation. >> yeah. all right, jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. coming up on "cbs mornings," tony dokoupil will be live from normandy with complete coverage of the 80th anniversary of the d-day invasion. secretary of state antony blinken will join us, as well. and now to the severe weather as tornadoes tore across the midwest and the east. a twister killed a 2-year-old boy and critically injured his mother when a tree fell on their

home in suburban detroit yesterday. officials say the quick developing tornado struck several neighborhoods. in gaithersburg, maryland, outside of the nation's capital, several people captured video of a tornado as it moved through the area. trees fell on several structures trapping people inside. five people were rescued from one location. out west it's the record-breaking heat that is posing a danger to millions of americans. excessive heat warnings and advisories are in effect in states stretching from california to texas. temperatures hit triple digits throughout the region yesterday. and the heat could set new records today with forecast highs of 112 degrees in las vegas and phoenix, 107 expected in fresno, california. and now to hunter biden's gun trial where prosecutors could rest today. there are several witnesses left including hallie biden, his brother's widow, with whom he also had a relationship with. that follows yesterday's

salacious testimony from hunter biden's ex-wife and former girlfriend. cbs' scott macfarlane was there. >> reporter: first lady jill biden spent a third day at the courthouse, again seated behind hunter biden, as prosecutors tried to prove he illegally purchased this colt handgun while using drugs in late 2018, lying on the application form. they called two women formerly in his life to the stand to help make their case. his ex-wife, kathleen buhle, testified she found a crack pipe at their washington, d.c., home in 2015, was rejected when she urged him to go to rehab, and would scour his car to ensure their kids didn't find drugs. under cross-examination, hunter biden's attorney, abbe lowell, got buhle to admit she never actually saw hunter biden do drugs. former justice department official tom dupree -- >> the key evidence is going to be provided by people who were intimately close with hunter biden. his ex-wife, ex-girlfriends, and the like. >> reporter: former girlfriend zoe kesten, who dated him for much of 2018, testified hunter

biden frequently bought and used crack. at times using a chopstick to clean out his crack pipe. >> i went one time for 13 days without sleeping and smoking crack and drinking vodka exclusively. >> reporter: kestan said the president's son was using drugs as late as september, 2018, weeks before he bought the gun and again weeks later in november, 2018. prosecutors showed the jury a series of photos of drugs allegedly used by hunter biden and an image from a video of a shirtless biden allegedly with drug paraphernalia. >> it leaves no doubt that hunter biden was abusing controlled substances. i mean, it doesn't give much room for the defense to argue that he wasn't at least at some point in time addicted. >> reporter: hunter biden has pleaded not guilty to all three felony charges. scott macfarlane, cbs news, wilmington, delaware. two of former president trump's up coming criminal cases are being delayed. the appeals court halted the

interference case while it reviews a ruling allowing fulton county da fani willis to remain on the case. the federal judge overseeing the florida classified documents case abruptly changed the court schedule yesterday. judge aileen cannon altered the dates of upcoming hearings on issues including on trump's request to declare jack smith's appointment as special counsel invalid. in the middle east now, israel striking back against the rising attacks coming from hezbollah in lebanon while continuing to battle against hamas in gaza. the israeli military says fighter jets struck what it called a hamas compound operating out of an unrwa school in the gaza strip. hamas says more than 30 were killed including 14 children. as tensions rise along the israel-lebanon border, israel says it attacked a series of hezbollah targets in lebanon. it comes after a hezbollah drone strike hit a village in northern israel wounding nearly a dozen

and lift off of starliner atlas 5 carrying -- >> after years of delays, boeing is sending astronauts to space for the very first time. two nasa test pilots on board boeing's starliner capsule blasted off from florida's cape canaveral yesterday on an atlas 5 rocket. earlier a helium leak caused a delay. the capsule is expected to arrive at the international space station later today. a plan to fight gridlock in new york city is delayed, and a bill to protect contraception access is blocked. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" says senate republicans blocked a bill making contraception a federal right.

the democratic bill would have prevented states from passing laws limiting access to contraception. the measure failed to again the 60 votes needed to proceed. all but two republicans voted against it. gop lawmakers called the bill a political stunt. democrats want to put republicans on the record on reproductive rights issues during the election year. and "the new york times" reports governor kathy hochul halted new york city's long-awaited congestion pricing toll in a stunning 11th hour shift. the plan to charge most drivers entering manhattan's business district $15 was supposed to begin at the end of the month. it would have been the nation's first congestion pricing system. hochul cited the impact it would have on the city's economic recovery from covid and the financial burden it would place on people struggling with inflation. and "the wisconsin state journal" says the warden of the state's oldest prison and eight staff members were charged in connection with the deaths two of inmates.

ill, and 54 were hospitalized. the agency says testing is now under way to determine a definitive link. in an effort to thwart shoplifters, workers at some tj maxx stores are wearing police-type body cameras. tjx, which operates tj maxx, marshalls, and homegoods, has more than 4,900 stores across nine countries. according to a 2023 survey by the national retail federation, 11% of american retailers say they're piloting or testing this technology. and youtube is changing its policy on gun videos as it tries to prevent potentially dangerous content from reaching underage users. the platform owned by google says it will ban any videos demonstrating how to remove firearm safety devices, and videos showing homemade guns, automatic weapons, and certain firearm accessories like silencers will only be viewable to adults.

drones lit up the night sky over portsmouth, england, to mark the 80th anniversary of d-day. images included a spitfire, soldier, and the words "i remember." paratroopers re-created the jump onto the fields of normandy in honor of the heroes from the greatest generation. cbs' charlie d'agata joined them. >> reporter: they're on the verge of launching the largest air assault in the world has ever seen. more than 13,000 paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st airborne divisions flying straight into a hail of german anti-aircraft fire. this week, hundreds of american military veterans are taking that same journey on c-47s, the same aircraft used in the invasion that night. >> oh, yeah -- >> reporter: like airborne vet frankie scarlata from new orleans.

what is this d-day landing like? >> this d-day landing is so symbolic that it really rivals the birth of my first child. >> reporter: the birth of your first child. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: he wasn't exaggerating. we boarded one of the three c-47s that would drop us over france from an airfield in england. as we took that same route, we shared just a hint of the dangers those paratroopers faced. a torn parachute, tangled rigging, missing the drop zone. the big difference here is some of these guys were just 19, 20 years old. they're landing in the dark, aircraft is coming under fire, and so are they. crossing the english channel into france, aside from the roar of the engines, you could hear a pin drop. until it was go time. when one by one, we followed in their footsteps. >> jump! >> reporter: we each took our own leap of faith into clear blue skies.
