When we're contemplating how the media landscape is changing I hope those in power understand how important quality of content is. Toby Longbottom posted an intro to his Docu-serries for Stuff this morning and it hooked me. It follows Emma, an adopted Russian orphan and her search for her family. It's beautiful, and moving, and it's an important story. Whatever the next 10 years of media upheaval bring, I hope our governments continue to support the creators of content like this, and that journalists like Paula Penfold and creators like Toby have places like Stuff to create important content. Social commerce is an unstoppable force, so how do we save local retail? As AI content creation widens and ANYONE can create long-form content the way they create an Instagram post today, and as social networks deploy one-click shop on top of that content, how can traditional NZ-based retail maintain attention? One thing's for sure, at least IMO, it's not by ploughing millions into traditional ads. Personally, I'm hoping local retailers aim at where the ball is going to be, not just where it is now. The social commerce revolution where content, community, communication and commerce are the same thing IS coming, spend 3 hours in Beijing or Singapore and you'll understand. Local retail is important and valuable. Let's hope they can move fast.
